Who Attends SAGE?

Students

SAGE accepts applications from qualified undergraduate and graduate students from all over the world. Students typically major in geophysics, geology, physics, math, or a related field. 


Successful applicants will have a strong background in math and physics (see required coursework below), and will have completed at least their junior year of undergraduate studies prior to the start of the program. 


Course credit may be available (and must be arranged prior to arrival at SAGE and subject to approval of your home institution and advisor).


Professionals

SAGE welcomes applications from industry professionals, college and university faculty, and postdoctoral fellows seeking professional development opportunities.

How to Apply to SAGE

Step 1: Review the coursework requirements below to see if you qualify for SAGE 2020.

Step 2: Fill out and submit the online application form.

Step 3: Contact potential references and direct them to the reference form download page. Two filled out reference forms are required for a complete application.

Step 4: Submit a letter of interest (limit one page, single-spaced) and all relevant transcripts.


Please submit all application materials (letter of interest, transcripts, and two reference forms) electronically as attachments to summerofappliedgeophysics@gmail.com. We request that you include your last name in all submitted application documents (e.g. JohnSmithLetterOfInterest.pdf)

Step 1: Review Coursework Requirements

The following coursework is required to be considered for SAGE:


  • Minimum of one year (two semesters or three quarters) of college physics. Coursework must include electricity and magnetism.
  • Minimum of three semesters of calculus; four semesters preferred. Coursework must include multivariable calculus.
  • Structural geology and introductory geophysics is recommended but not required


Note: Required coursework must be completed prior to attending SAGE, but does not have to be completed prior to submitting an application. Applicants currently enrolled in the above coursework will be considered to have met the coursework requirement.

Step 2: Complete Online Application Form

Please fill out the online application form to the best of your ability. Be sure to also submit two references, a letter of interest, and all relevant transcripts to summerofappliedgeophysics@gmail.com

Step 3: Provide References

Please supply two references from an academic advisor, research advisor, academic mentor, professor of relevant coursework, or supervisor. A reference consists of a completed reference form and may include a letter of recommendation (encouraged but not required). Completed reference forms and letters of recommendation should be submitted electronically as attachments to summerofappliedgeophysics@gmail.com.

Step 4a: Submit Letter of Interest

Submit a letter (limit one page, single-spaced) explaining how your educational background, courses, and experience have prepared you for participation in SAGE. Describe your career goals and your interest in SAGE as it relates to your academic and/or career development. 

Step 4b: Submit Transcripts

Please provide transcripts for all colleges or universities that you have attended (unofficial copies are acceptable).  For your identity protection, please mark through/black-out any Personal Identifying Information (PII) such as address, SSN, etc.
